Many were promoted from excellent front-line practice without formal management preparation, and professional development in the sector has understandably concentrated on client-facing\u00a0skills\u00a0rather than on leading the people who deliver it. The teams they lead are among the most diverse in the professional landscape, yet the practitioners carrying the heaviest cultural and emotional labour are commonly the least visible in decisions about workload,\u00a0development\u00a0and advancement.
