Winners have now been announced for the Ashoka Changemakers Initiative: Inspiring Approaches to First Nations, Métis and Inuit Learning.
The Counselling Foundation of Canada and CERIC sponsored three awards of $1,000 each for the top entries relating to career education and workplace learning in Canada. The winning entries in this category are:
Winners will be honoured at the Changemakers Summit, taking place April 16-18, 2012 in Gatineau Quebec. The event brings together leaders, policy experts, educators, philanthropists, award winners and project partners of the Changemakers Initiative to celebrate and acknowledge innovations, initiatives, and trailblazers in First Nations, Métis and Inuit education and lifelong learning from across Canada. Presenters at the Summit include The Right Honourable Paul Martin; Mary Simon, President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami; and Commissioner Wilton Littlechild of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
The Changemakers Initiative engaged Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, communities and educational leaders from across Canada and around the world, inviting them to share their innovative ideas and projects to support First Nations, Metis and Inuit learners in Canada. The result was an overwhelming response, culminating in 266 submissions.

The first CERIC-sponsored Career Development Mini-Forum will examine how to support the growing number of Canadian workers living with chronic illness in a workshop on April 27 in Toronto, presented by the Association of Career Professionals International (ACPI).
For the first time in history, chronic illness has overtaken acute disease as the major health problem across Canada and around the world: 1 in 3 working-aged Canadians suffer from at least one chronic condition with the number expected to rise as the workforce ages.
In this workshop, The Facts, Fiction & Feasibility: Supporting Individuals with Chronic Illness, participants will:
- Learn about the unique challenges and needs of workers with chronic illness and the effects they have on the bottom line
- Create an action plan to help clients or employees who face engagement challenges due to chronic health conditions
- Create the business case for accommodation and flexibility as a means to improve the engagement and productivity of these workers
The presenter is Jason Reid, founder of the coaching and consulting firm Sick with Success® and a thought leader in the field of chronic illness and productivity. All workshop participants receive a copy of his new book, Thriving in the Age of Chronic Illness.
