The KWYO Life Resume Project – The Right Career Choice for You
Name: Diane Voth-Stewart
Organization: Vision Path Solutions and D. Voth Consulting (Vancouver, BC)
Summary: Purpose and self-worth in one’s career and personal life is based on the eternal truth of ‘knowing yourself first’. Introducing the ‘know what you own’ process in elementary school will clarify strengths, skills and natural behavioural style ultimately guiding students to purposeful career and life choices for their individual path.
Project Description: Provide students with their own ‘life resume” template (also online accessible), grade level appropriate (k – 12), wherein they regularly diarize their accomplishments. Whether it’s a success on a test, in art, kindness to others, extracurricular activities, books read, et al, they can build on this on a regular basis – there is no judgement on what they regard as a success.
To aid in this process, they can choose from a list of age appropriate adjectives that help describe their ‘gifts’. As a predominant theme develops teachers/caregivers will have a clearer understanding of where to encourage the child on their path as well as observe perceived weaknesses that may warrant attention.
Simultaneously introducing the basics of the 4 human behavioural styles enhances this process in that it clarifies for the student why they may respond to situations differently than others and that each of them is a leader within themselves.
Perceived Impact: The life resume process will guide students to future career decisions based on a historical document of their gifts – what they ‘own’. As well, this process would invariably confirm their self-worth and give them an understanding of the uniqueness of others – diminishing bullying, lowering the chances of future criminal behaviour and increase communication in both the classroom and the home.
Time and costs related to misguided choices for post-secondary education is decreased, youth unemployment is decreased, job satisfaction will be increased and ultimately, there will be decreased debt on society.
