Overview of the webinar series
Career and employment centres are being asked to deliver more, for increasingly diverse and complex client populations, with less predictable funding and closer scrutiny of outcomes, while artificial intelligence reshapes both service delivery and the labour market clients are entering. The pressure lands hardest on the managers, team leads and senior practitioners holding services together. Many were promoted from excellent front-line practice without formal management preparation, and professional development in the sector has understandably concentrated on client-facing skills rather than on leading the people who deliver it. The teams they lead are among the most diverse in the professional landscape, yet the practitioners carrying the heaviest cultural and emotional labour are commonly the least visible in decisions about workload, development and advancement. The result is a leadership capability gap at exactly the level where sector resilience is decided, and a pattern of experienced practitioners leaving leadership roles, or the field, through exhaustion rather than lack of commitment. This series addresses that gap directly.
Why career professionals should attend
If you lead a career or employment centre team, formally or informally, or expect to, this series gives you what most leadership training in the sector does not: frameworks built for your context, applied to a live situation you are actually managing, with the realities of leading a diverse team built in rather than bolted on.
By attending this highly interactive and practical series, you will:
- Learn to lead through change without absorbing all of it yourself, and to check whether your communication genuinely reaches everyone on your team
- Practise coaching, delegation and feedback conversations that work across cultural differences, building accountability while protecting trust
- Learn to audit and redistribute the invisible labour that quietly accumulates with the same practitioners, one of the most reliable predictors of burnout in this sector
- Learn to examine service outcomes by client group rather than in aggregate, and to improve programs through low-risk pilots rather than waiting for funding
- Practise making the case for career services and inclusive practice in the operational language senior decision-makers act on
You will leave the series with three reusable tools, a Change Impact and Pressure Map, an Inclusive Team Capacity and Risk Scan, and a Strategic Case one-pager, plus a written 90-day plan.Whether you are already leading a team, preparing to step into leadership or repositioning from front-line delivery, you will leave with a clearer, evidence-based articulation of where you stand and the development path in front of you.
Sessions
Webinar #1: Leading Through Change: Steadying Yourself, Steadying a Diverse Team
Thursday, October 1 – 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm ET (check your time zone)
- Analyze the drivers of change affecting your centre and assess how those changes land differently across a diverse team, including staff on precarious or grant-funded contracts
- Apply a structured sense-making and communication cadence that reaches a culturally and linguistically diverse team through ambiguity and incomplete information
- Demonstrate state-management techniques from coaching psychology to remain grounded in high-pressure and culturally complex conversations
- Identify early indicators of change fatigue across the team and recognize where that load is falling unequally
- Construct a 30-day communication plan for a change currently underway, tested against whether it actually reaches every member of your team
Webinar #2: Building Inclusive, High-Performing Teams That Do Not Burn Out
Thursday, October 8 – 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm ET (check your time zone)
- Assess team composition, strengths and real capacity, including the invisible labour that diverse practitioners frequently absorb: cultural brokering, interpretation and the most complex client files
- Demonstrate coaching, delegation and feedback conversations that build accountability across cultural differences without eroding trust
- Apply psychological safety practices that account for the unequal risk different team members carry when they speak up
- Respond to the health realities of a predominantly female workforce, including menopause and perimenopause, chronic illness and caregiving load, with practical adjustments that do not depend on disclosure
- Differentiate ordinary workload strain from burnout and compassion fatigue, and design one change to workflow, role boundaries or assignment practice that redistributes load equitably
Webinar #3: Leading Strategically: Equity-Centred Innovation, Influence and a Practice You Can Sustain
Thursday, October 15 – 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm ET (check your time zone)
- Evaluate current programs and services against client need, labour market evidence and equity of access for underserved client populations
- Design a responsive service or program improvement using a rapid, low-risk pilot approach, co-designed with the communities it is intended to serve
- Formulate a strategic case for career services, including the equity outcomes they produce, in language senior leaders, funders and institutional partners act on
- Demonstrate upward influence and executive framing, including advocating for resources and inclusive practice from a position of limited formal power
- Construct a personal leadership development and sustainability plan, with attention to the additional representation load carried by leaders from equity-deserving groups
