Common Performance Strengths of Elite Performers and the Elite Performer Selection Report
For over twenty years now, I have done research on, and consulted with Elite Performers. Recently, I completed the Elite Performer Study, a Toronto-based Research project that studied over 15,000 Elite Performers (top 5%) in their fields, in over 200 professions and vocational groups.
Interestingly, of the 15,000 Elite Performers studied, all 15,000 had six common Performance Strengths in common, no matter what the profession or vocational area.
Following are the six common strengths, with a brief description of each.
Elevated Problem Solving Abilities
Contrary to popular opinion, those at the top are not significantly brighter than others. They tend, however, to be high-average intellectually, and have the ability to think clearly, and to grasp essential material readily. As well, they show an unusual “clarity of focus” in their thinking.
Strong Drive and Influence
Elite Performers are bold, persuasive, and willing to take a risk. They are not afraid to “speak up”, nor to initiate activities, even under difficult and challenging circumstances.
Emotionally Resilient
High-end performers remain calm under pressure, and manage frustration well. They are psychologically well-insulated and tend to “bounce back” better than most.
Self-Control
All Elite Performers demonstrate an elevated level of self-discipline. They plan well, set goals and follow through with great consistency. They display timeliness and great attention to detail.
Interpersonal Skills
While not all are the classic “people person”, all Elite Performers show both a willingness and a comfort in dealing with customers and co-workers. They are good listeners, and tend to be excellent team players.
Practical
Elite Performers are able to evaluate the needs of a customer, or a situation, and to devise a practical solution to the matter. They display a healthy balance between intuition, theory, and “getting the job done”.
All 15,000 Elite Performers that we studied had all six of the above Performance Strengths. Five out of six is not adequate, it seems to develop the required mindset needed. Trainers and Consultants will be happy to know that Elite Performance can be assessed, trained, and developed. Furthermore, longitudinal follow-up, and re-testing indicates that once developed, the Elite Performer mindset seems to remain.
At this time, we are rolling-out the Elite Performer Selection Report. Developed specifically for the identification and development of Elite Performers within the Sales profession, this report has been validated for use in many other fields.
