Synopsis

Practice Principles: Career Theories and Models at Work provides career development practitioners with theory-informed principles for everyday application. It is a follow-up to the popular Career Theories and Models at Work: Ideas for Practice book. The new book fills a gap in the field that addresses foundational career practice principles, ensuring that techniques used by practitioners are underpinned by actual theory.

Career practitioners need to be equipped and up-to-date with the latest contemporary theories and models in the field. It is also important for practitioners to make informed choices about the approaches and strategies they use in practice. This book offers:

  • A “go-to” guide outlining core foundational principles that every career practitioner can apply in their practice
  • A reference practitioners can use to enhance their approaches to career interventions
  • An accessible resource they can add to their toolkit or use as a companion manual to Career Theories and Models at Work: Ideas for Practice

Practice Principles is intended for both current practitioners and as well as those just entering the field, and can be used as a supplementary text for undergraduate and graduate courses focused on career counselling. The book includes 10 chapters that illuminate connections between foundational practice principles and the theories and models where they originated.

Reviews

This book is more than just a follow-up to Career Theories and Models at Work: Ideas for Practice (Arthur et al., 2019). Inside, you’ll find eight essential principles that offer a framework for practitioners of career guidance, counseling and consultation to metacognize their practice in a reflective and structured manner. These principles are equally beneficial for researchers seeking to connect their work with real-world applications. This exceptional book significantly elevates the quality of both practice and research.

Simply brilliant! Most novel and creative way to bring one’s own AI (authentic intelligence) into self-supervision of their practice. Only here are the eight principles jelled from 295 practices weaved from 43 chapters on the theory and models defining career development found. The “Career Practice Reflection Guide” magically injects a personal supervisor within your practice. This changed my practice. I’ll never supervise without it again!

The work of career professionals is critically important. The eight principles and practice points in this book will ground and support you in the complex challenges you face day-to-day. This is every career professional’s go-to guide for theory-informed practice.

A mustread for all career development professionals regardless of experience, Practice Principles: Career Theories and Models is the perfect accompaniment to Career Theories and Models at Work: Ideas for Practice. This informative new book will support anyone wanting to truly understand the career theory to practice interface while making sure they have laid the foundations for quality career development work.

This is a treasure trove of career theories and practical examples, demonstrating their real-world applications. The authors invite readers on a captivating journey through a rich tapestry of ideas, strategies, and methods designed to create a profound deep understanding of how we can inspire and nurture individuals’ curiosity and decision-making through career dialogue and exploration. Whether you are an experienced career practitioner or a novice in guidance and counselling, this book serves as a thought-provoking and introspective “how to guide,” unlocking creativity, confidence, and competence in lifelong learning… I wholeheartedly recommend this work.

This book consolidates the complexities and addresses the practicalities of how to provide effective career development services in a most comprehensive manner. This is the first book I have read that deals with the core of career development services and what it is that career development practitioners should focus on to provide a valuable service … I can confidently say that Career Theories and Models at Work: Ideas for Practice and Career Theories and Models at Work: Practice Principles will become known as the two foundational resources for all career development practitioners with an interest in providing an effective career development service.

This new book, Practice Principles: Career Theories and Models at Work, is an excellent tool that will support professional development and daily reflection among practitioners, both by themselves as well as together with colleagues. The book inspires to dig deeper into the different theories and models and to reflect upon them based on your own experience.

This book bridges the divide between theory and practice, offering readers a comprehensive understanding of conceptualization and intervention. The well-crafted chapters explore a diverse array of topics, ensuring a thorough coverage of the subject matter. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to my students, confident that it will enrich their learning experience and enhance their practical skills.
